What is ASCO Solenoid Valve?
ASCO Solenoid Valve is a type of valve that is controlled by an electric current. A coil of wire, also called an electromagnet, is energized to create a magnetic field that moves a plunger. This movement opens or closes the valve, allowing or shutting off the flow of liquids or gases through it.
ASCO Solenoid valves are the most frequently used control elements in fluidics. Their tasks are to shut off, release, dose, distribute or mix fluids and are found in many application areas. (Fluidics in engineering is the technology of using the flow characteristics of liquid or gas to operate a control system).
ASCO Solenoid Valves offer fast and safe switching, high reliability, long service life, good medium compatibility of the materials used, low control power and compact design.

How ASCO Solenoid Valve Function?
Solenoid valves operate using an electromagnetic solenoid coil to change the state of a valve from open to closed, or vice-versa. If the solenoid valve is ‘normally closed’, when the coil is energized, the valve gets lifted open by the electromagnetic force produced by the coil. Here are some common operations.
- ASCO 2-Way Solenoid Valves have one inlet and one outlet and are used to permit and shut off fluid flow. The two types of operations are “Normally Closed” and “Normally Open”.
- ASCO 3-Way Solenoid Valves have three pipe connections and two orifices. When one orifice is open, the other is closed and vice versa. 3-way solenoid valves are commonly used to alternately apply pressure to and exhaust pressure from a valve actuator or a single acting cylinder. ASCO 3-Way solenoid valves can be normally closed, normally open or universal.
- ASCO 4-Way Solenoid Valves have four or five pipe connections, commonly called ports. One pressure inlet, two cylinder ports providing pressure to double acting cylinder or actuator, and one or two outlets to exhaust pressure from the cylinders.

ASCO Solenoid valves may perform to a substandard level for a number of reasons. Here, we outline the top common operation mistakes why ASCO solenoid valve may not function effectively.
Top common mistakes
Contaminated media or Wrong Media
This is one of the most common problems with solenoid valve function. Using the wrong type of media or contaminated media can lead to problems with effective component functionality. If possible, install the solenoid vertically, in order to prevent media accumulation. A filter can also prevent contaminated media entering a solenoid valve.
Wrong capacity
Over sizing or under sizing a solenoid valve can result in the valve working to an unsatisfactory level. Orifice size and valve configuration both contribute to the efficient working of a solenoid valve and, therefore, ensuring the correct size an important choice.
Wrong application
Applying a valve to an unsuitable application can cause a solenoid valve to experience a shorter lifespan than usual. Solenoid valves for ATEX or hazardous environments will be advertised as such and it is important that a valve which isn’t described as being suitable for dangerous environments isn’t used in one.
Under Voltage or Over Voltage
ASCO solenoid valves are usually designed to work at a nominal value, plus or minus 10%. If there is inadequate power supply, it may cause excessive noise and a reduced lifespan. Over voltage can result in overheating, solenoid failure and reduced lifespan.
